George W. Bush on Reparations
Who he is: President of the United States
Official stand: Leaning against
Details:
Until 2003, Bush made few public statements about the thornier
race-related issues on the national agenda. With the Republican victories
in the 2002 elections, however, the president has been slowly edging off
the fence, and taking a stand, and by all indications, that stand is
against reparations.
Bush announced on
Jan 15, 2003, that his administration would be opposing the University of
Michigan quota system before the Supreme Court. And previously, two of his
nominees
spoke out against reparations.
While none of these are definitive statements, it seems likely that as
time goes on, we will only see from this administration more words and
actions that will keep the reparations movement at bay.
Quotes:
- "As a nation, as a government and as individuals, we must
be vigilant in responding to prejudice wherever we find it, yet as we
work to address the wrong of racial prejudice, we must not use means
that create another wrong and thus perpetuate our divisions"
