Where I stand on the IRS blunder
I figured that I would get some people contacting me about the
recent IRS gaffe in which they paid out $30 million in
"reparations" payments, wondering whether or not this means that
I need to take action on my pledge. And indeed, one person has already
written about this. So I feel its appropriate to address this question.
In taking the stand that I am, I am opposing any system which embraces
the ideals that reparations proponents profess. Our system has not yet
embraced these. It is true that an error has been made. However, errors
will always be made, meaning that even the most just system imaginable might
inadvertently support something unjust.
Now as much as I love America, I'm not going to claim for a moment that
we have the "most just system imaginable". It is, honestly, one that I feel
has strayed quite far from its noble origins, and I want to see it get back
there. But for the moment, it is not yet unjust enough that I'm ready to
take the step of withdrawl.
This web site is about the conditions under which I would take that
step. Our system supporting paying out reparations to and from descendents of
the dead fighters of an old argument is one such condition. But this is not
what has happened. What has happened is that this system has erred. It's
error is telling on many fronts, but that's for another time. For right
now, this system has not purposefully supported the reparations idea, and so
in turn, I will continue to not completely withdraw my own support of it.
Please don't be under any illusions here: I will take this step if it
comes to it. But that time has not come yet.
