Jesse Jackson Jr. on Reparations

Who he is: US Congressman, Second Congressional District of Illinois, son of activist Jesse Jackson

Official stand: In Favor

Details: Jesse Jackson Jr. was first elected to Congress in 1995, and is currently in his 4th term. He has supported slavery reparations pretty much since first getting elected.

Quotes:

"I am not opposed to a congressional apology for slavery, but contrition carries conditions. A government apology for slavery is a valid collective symbolic act, but it is appropriate only if it is accompanied by substance that repairs the damage that is the basis for the apology."
"An Apology For Slavery? Contrition Carries Conditions," op-ed piece, 6/7/1997
