John Conyers on Reparations

Who he is: US Representative from Michigan, 14th district (18th term)

Official stand: In favor

Details: Representative Conyers has been the primary Congressional proponent of slave reparations. Though he has not come out with a clear, unambigious endorsement of reparation payments, he is the author of HR 40, a bill that would create a commision that would study the effects of slavery and, in his words, "make recommendations to Congress on appropriate remedies to redress the harm inflicted on living African Americans". He has introduced this bill every year since 1989, and says he plans to continue doing so until it passes.

Quotes:

"It is a fact that slavery flourished in the United States and constituted an immoral and inhumane deprivation of African slaves' lives, liberty and cultural heritage. As a result, millions of African Americans today continue to suffer great injustices."
