Sam Brownback on Reparations
Who he is: US Senator for Kansas (Republican)
Official stand: Unknown
Details:
On January 6 2003, Brownback proposed
creating a panel to study race-related issues, with a strong disposition
towards views that favor the payment of reparations. In fact, reparations
themselves were one of the things mentioned as necessary to look at.
However, since then, the senator has backed
off of his idea, with no specific reason given. From the tone of the
article, it's possible he realizes now just what a volitile issue this is.
Still, like almost all politicians right now, his views on this have not
been explicitly stated.
This isn't the first time that the senator has taken on similar issues.
In 2002 he
introduced a
bill to call for a national museum of black history and culture. With
the current brouhaha over Trent Lott's statements on Strom Thurmond, it's
difficult to tell how much he is playing politics, and how much he might
truly favor reparations. In any case, he is worth keeping a close eye on.
Quotes:
- "We must engage all facets of the issue of race relations in
America. The Republicans must continue to be a catalyst for
positive change."
- -The
Washington Times, Jan 6 2003
